Bartel Named Mountain West's Defensive Player of the Week

LARAMIE -- Ashley Sheppard, move on over.

Haley Bartel Sunday became the all-time leader in shutouts in Wyoming soccer history, slamming the door on Northern Colorado, 3-0. That was the 20th blanking of the senior's illustrious career on the high plains.

“She’s a special person and a special player. She’s a captain for a reason,” Wyoming head coach Josh Purdum said. “For me, it’s been a pleasure to coach her for the last 2.5 years, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of her career can produce.”

The Prior Lake, Minn., native has yet to allow a goal on 18 shot attempts through two games. That's why Monday she was named the Mountain West's Defensive Player of the Week. It's the second time in her Cowgirl tenure Bartel has earned this honor.

Wyoming is 2-0 this season with wins over Drake and UNC. Bartel and the Cowgirls will host Weber State at the Madrid Sports Complex Thursday. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.

The Wildcats are coming off 4-1 loss to visiting Boise State, one in which the home team managed just nine total shots on goal. Sayler Schlosser netted the lone goal at the 31-minute mark, knotting the game up at 1-1.
