Longtime Wyoming Basketball Assistant Lands at Weber State
LARAMIE -- Longtime Wyoming basketball assistant Shaun Vandiver has found a new home.
After spending the previous seven seasons in Laramie, the 56-year-old Monday was officially added to the staff at Weber State in Ogden, Utah.
"We are very excited to have Shaun join our staff at Weber State," head coach Eric Duft said in a statement. "He was a great player and brings a tremendous amount of knowledge to the court. He is exceptional at coaching the big guys and is a tireless recruiter. Shaun and his wife Danielle will be great role models for the young men in our program."
Vandiver, who had three separate stints at Wyoming (graduate assistant 2002-03, assistant from 2005-10 and, most recently, 2018-25), helped lead the Cowboys to the NCAA Tournament three times. He served under bench bosses Steve McClain, Heath Schroyer, Allen Edwards, Jeff Linder and Sundance Wicks.
After stops at Northern Colorado, Bowling Green and Boise State, Vandiver was the head coach at Division II Emporia State in Emporia, Kansas, from 2011-18. He led the Hornets to five Mid-America Athletic Association tournaments and a trip to the Division II NCAA Tournament second round.
"I'm excited to come to Weber State, which is a great basketball program with tremendous history and tradition," Vandiver told weberstatesports.com. "My relationships with coach Duft, as well as Jeff Linder, Phil Beckner and (current UW Director of Operations) Tim O'Flannigan, played a big part in my coming to Weber State. I can't wait to get to work and get after it to help us win and be successful."
Vandiver, a Bolingbrook, Ill., native, began his playing career at Hutchinson Community College (where he played for McClain) before transferring to Colorado ahead of the 1988 season. The 6-foot-10 center was named the Big Eight Rookie of the Year and is still fifth on the Buffaloes' all-time scoring list with 1,876 points.
He was eventually selected No. 25 overall by the Golden State Warriors in the 1991 NBA Draft.
Vandiver's daughter, Aubrey Vandiver, was a standout on the Cowgirls basketball team from 2007-11, earning All-Mountain West honors three times. She also was named the conference's Player of the Year as a senior, averaging nearly 20 points and nine rebounds a game.
She helped lead Wyoming to a WNIT Championship during his freshman campaign.
Wicks, who is entering Year 2 on the sidelines in Laramie, revamped his staff this offseason, adding Chris Thomas, Will Martin and former Cowboy guard, Chris McMillian. Nick Whitmore and Nic Reynolds, along with O'Flannigan, are also back for the 2025-26 season.
Pat Monaghan, who spent just one season at UW, was named an assistant at Nebraska this offseason. General Manager Patrick Stacy is also now at North Carolina State.
"He's the elder statesman," Wicks said of Vandiver last October. "He's a role model. He's a mentor. He's a guy who's lived it, No. 25 pick in the draft. What this younger generation, I hope, starts to pick up at some point is that you should respect the past. Honor and respect history and tradition. Respect the past ... Once a Cowboy, always a Cowboy, right? But for V, we could all learn from his journey. I mean, he was drafted (into the NBA), then he had to go have a stint overseas. We could all be so lucky to play that many years at a high level.
"Thirteen surgeries later, this is part of what you sacrifice to get in the game."
