Gear Up For Game Day: SDSU Aztecs

SAN DIEGO, Calif., -- The Wyoming Cowboys hit the road heading to San Diego State on Saturday at 5 p.m. MT. It will be Wyoming’s first contest inside Snapdragon Stadium for UW and the first trip to San Diego since the 2019 season.

The contest will also feature a pair of defenses that posted shutouts last week.

Notes on the Cowboys
Another Shutout: The Wyoming Cowboys gave a great defensive effort against Colorado State earning their second shutout of the season. It marked the first time since the 1966 season that the Pokes have recorded two shutouts in one season. UW beat Air Force 13-0 and beat Wichita State 55-0 that season. Those games were also in the first and eighth games of the season, just like this season for the Brown and Gold after shutting out Akron 10-0 in the season opener.
Another Challenge: The Cowboys will face another challenge this week with a trip to San Diego State in a game that features two of the top defensive units in the conference. It also marks the third game this season that Wyoming has faced a team that is either ranked or receiving votes in both polls as UW faced Utah and UNLV earlier this season.
A Note on This Week: The Cowboys and San Diego State Aztecs feature the top two defenses in the Mountain West so far this season. Both teams recorded a shut out last week with the Cowboys winning 28-0 against Colorado State and the Aztecs earning a 23-0 win at Fresno State. It marked the sixth time in MW history that two teams have recorded a shutout in the same week. It also marks the first time in MW history that teams that posted a shutout the week prior play each other the following week.
Anderson in Last Two Games: Quarterback Kaden Anderson has been on point passing over the last two games. He has completed 74 percent of his passes going 39-of-54 with three touchdowns. He has thrown for over 1,600 yards this season with 11 touchdown passes.
Durr Jr. Making Plays: Wide receiver Chris Durr Jr. recorded seven receptions to go along with 67 yards against Colorado State. It tied a season-high in receptions after seven against Akron, both Cowboy wins. He now has 37 receptions on the season which is a career best. He also has 398 yards receiving which is also now a career best.
Great Scott: Running back Sam Scott found the end zone from 37 yards against Colorado State. It marked his second touchdown of the season and the seventh of his career with the Brown and Gold. He finished the game with three rushes for 68 yards.
Forcing Interceptions: The Cowboys recorded three interceptions in the contest against Colorado State. It was a season-high and the most since recording three against Northern Illinois on Sept. 11, 2021. Desman Hearns, Jones Thomas and Markie Grant all recorded interceptions in the contest.
Hearns Adds Another Pick: Nickel Desman Hearns recorded his second interception of the season against Colorado State. That helped lead to a score for the Pokes. He is tied for the team lead with linebacker Brayden Johnson with two interceptions. The duo ranks eighth in the conference and No. 41 in the nation in interceptions.
Big Moment for Thomas: Safety Jones Thomas recorded his first career interception against Colorado State. It was a special one for the Fort Collins native. His grandfather Earlie is a Hall of Famer at Colorado State and his father Jeramie also played for the Rams.
Welcome to the Club: Cornerback Markie Grant has been wearing a club over the last few weeks due to injury, but that did not hinder him recording his first career interception against the Colorado State Rams. It was one of three for the Cowboys during the game. He also added three solo stops in the contest.
Eller in the Backfield: Linebacker Evan Eller led the Cowboys with seven tackles against Colorado State. He also recorded his second sack of the season in the contest. He now has two on the season and 3.5 in his career. Eller is second on the team with season in tackles with 46.
 
About San Diego State: While Wyoming took possession of the Bronze Boot with a 28-0 victory over Colorado State last Saturday night, the Aztecs were also shutting out a rival and collecting the Old Oil Can trophy with a 23-0 win at Fresno State.
Lucky Sutton, who rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown against the Bulldogs, is second in the Mountain West in rushing averaging 94.6 yards per game with seven touchdowns. Quarterback Jayden Denegal has completed 64.8% of his passes for 1,221 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions.
SDSU’s defense is one of the best in the FBS ranking second nationally in points allowed (10.4 per game) and ninth in yards allowed (255.0 per game). Fresno State did not have a single play of at least 15 yards against the Aztecs, who were led by Dalesean Staley’s seven tackles and two pass breakups and August Salvati’s interception.
The Aztecs hold a slim 20-19 lead in the all-time series with UW courtesy of last season’s 27-24 win in Laramie. SDSU has won the last three meetings, including the 2016 Mountain West championship game (27-24 at War Memorial Stadium). The Cowboys are looking for their first victory in San Diego since 2011 (30-27) in the old Jack Murphy Stadium.
