Pokes Sit Fourth After Day 1 of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate
PALM DESERT, Calif., – The University of Wyoming men’s golf team completed Day 1 of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Monday. The Pokes are fourth as a team at 281 (-7), and Brody Knowlton is currently tied for the lead at 67 (-5) in a tournament being played at The Classic Club.
“I’m really happy for Brody Knowlton. He’s been working hard,” head coach Joe Jensen said. “We got a good start on Monday. I feel good about the prep we did. The guys played steady. I want to give them credit. This is the first time a lot of them have played Classic Club. We are trying to stack good days and today was just another good day.”
Knowlton’s 67 matches his career-best round that he set at the most recent tournament, the Arizona N.I.T. His Monday round was littered with seven birdies, five of which were on the back nine.
Knowlton shares the lead with three other guys. Colorado is atop the team leaderboard at 276 (-12), while Sacramento State and Maryland round out the top three at 279 (-9) and 280 (-8), respectively.
Kellen Ball also shot in red numbers and is tied for 14th. He fired a 70 (-2), and he closed strong, as well, carding a five back-nine birdies.
Conner Scheich and Brody Leid each recorded a 72 (E) and share 44th place. Kristof Panke, who is in a tie for 73rd, logged a first round 74 (+2) and his score is dropped. Austin Barry, who’s playing as an individual, is tied for 115th following an opening round 79 (+7).
Day 2 of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate commences at 9 a.m. (MST) on Tuesday.
