Cowgirls Can Create Distance in Standings With Big Weekend
LARAMIE -- This three-horse race is coming down the back stretch and there's plenty of company in the rear-view mirror.
Wyoming can add some serious cushion in the standings with consecutive home matches on the horizon. New Mexico will pay a visit to the Madrid Sports Complex Thursday and Mountain West newcomer UTEP comes to town on Saturday.
The Cowgirls and Lobos will hook up at 3 p.m. and the Miners' tilt gets under way at 1 p.m. Both games will be streamed on MW+.
Josh Purdum's team has won two straight and eight of the last nine. Six of those victories have come on the road. Colorado College currently sits atop the standings with a perfect 4-0 league record, followed by Wyoming and Hawaii, which have both lost once.
“It was really important in these first four (Mountain West Conference) games, three of them being on the road, that we put a stamp on the league points wise,” Wyoming's head coach said, following a 4-2 win over UNLV last weekend in Las Vegas. “We needed to have some performances to set the tone. It was really important to get those results and get out healthy. Now, we can spend some time in front of our fans and hopefully continue to push toward the top of the league.”
The Cowgirls at 10-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 (9 points) in Mountain West Conference play are in a four-way tie for second place. Both the Lobos and Miners have nine points, as well, making this homestand for Wyoming that much more important.
Alyssa Glover leads the conference and team with seven goals to go alongside five assists for a team- and league-high 19 points. She’s just three points behind the school record of 69 career points. Glover already has the program record of 26 goals.
Isabel Vasco and Brooke Brown have each netted five goals. Brown accumulated more than half of those in the most recent game at UNLV. She boasted Wyoming’s first hat trick in 10 years and became the first freshman to accomplish the feat.
Goalkeeper, Haley Bartel, is also near the top of the conference in many statistical categories. She is tops in clean sheets with seven. She’s also second in GAA at 0.86, which is comprised of 35 saves with just 11 goals allowed.
New Mexico’s Nicole Anderson is tied with Glover with seven goals in 2026. Presley Devey is tied with Anderson on 15 points with six goals and three assists.
Alyson Campbell has started all 12 matches in net for New Mexico. She owns 50 saves with 19 goals allowed for a GAA of 1.60.
UTEP’s Zeta McDannels is also atop the conference with seven goals. No other Miner has recorded more than three goals this season.
UTEP’s Savanah Finley is the lone keeper ahead of Bartel in GAA at 0.70. She’s made 43 saves with just nine goals surrendered in 13 starts.
Both the Lobos and Miners have a decided advantage over Wyoming, historically. New Mexico lays claim to a 21-9-8 series lead, while UTEP has a 5-1-1 lead all-time.
Following the match against the Miners, Wyoming takes to the road for the final time during the regular season. The Pokes travel to Colorado College on Oct. 24 followed by a match at Grand Canyon on Oct. 28.
