Lending Tree.com has ranked the most expensive towns in America and if you've looked at prices in the Jackson area, you'll agree with their #2 status. The criteria of the research is the towns needed to be a micropolitan area with the population of between 10,000 - 50,000 people.

They looked at the average household median income and compared that number to the average home value. They then were able to figure the home to income ratio. They then compared that town to a major city that compares to that same home to income ratio.

A key finding in this study is that most of the communities in the top 50, are vacation destinations. To be more specific, many of the top 10 are well known ski towns, like Jackson.

The #1 town on the list was Vineyard Haven, MA, which is part of Martha's Vineyard on the east coast and has an overall population of 20,277. The average median income was $77,392 and the median home value was $857,600. Giving them an 11.08 home value to income ratio. That means this community is comparable to San Francisco home median value, but income to home ratio is lower in San Francisco at 7.9.

Jackson is up at #2 with the entire 34,809 Jackson Hole population used in the study. Average median income is $87,143 with the median home value at $670,100. Give the area a 7.69 home to income ration. With those numbers, Jackson Hole is comparable to Los Angeles. That seems to be pretty fitting, considering the Jackson area is a well known California retreat.
