Laramie High School’s 2024 golf season is underway. Laramie has the first of five or six tournaments over the short six-week prep golf season in Wyoming on Thursday and Friday in Green River. Laramie is hoping to build with young players in the program, as they return just one state qualifier in junior Carson Moniz, who is considered one of the top players in the 4A boys’ ranks.

2024 Laramie High School Golf Preview

Fifth-year head coach Carlos Mellizo began practice on Monday by trying to figure out the varsity lineups.

“We have a lot of competitive players. Some kids have taken golf very seriously over the last four or five months; there have been a lot of tournaments (played) and things like that, so we have a nice crop of players to work with.”

Those numbers come with youth. Mellizo doesn’t expect a senior to be on the varsity squad this season. Moniz will lead the boys’ team and sophomore Addie Plassmeyer will lead the girls.

KOWB’s David Settle spoke to the duo at practice this week, as they prepare for this season. Both Plassmeyer and Moniz spoke about goals and expectations, what they’ve been focused on with their golf game, how the team looks, and more.

Moniz finished in 16th place at the 4A state championships as a sophomore last fall. Mellizo says Carson is continually amazed at how good he is getting.

“He’s improving so much in such a short amount of time. He takes it really seriously, even though he plays a lot of baseball, and golf is just one of many things he does. He is delighted with his progress and so am I. He’s really excited about how that will translate in competition this year.”

Mellizo felt the boys’ roster would be deeper than they’ve had over the last several years.

“I think we have a really good chance of qualifying as a team to go to state this year.”

For the girls’ squad, he wants them to take another step forward.

“Addie (Plassmeyer) is getting better and better. She is another player taking golf very seriously. We have Mia Trujillo and Sammie Mathews, who are great athletes, and a couple more, who are just coming out and getting some experience. I’d like to see those girls continue to grow in the game.”
