The last race in the 2023 high school cross-country season is here. Laramie competes at the Wyoming High School Cross Country State Championships on Saturday.

The championships are on Oct. 21, 2023. They are in Cheyenne at the Cheyenne Country Club. All three Cheyenne High Schools are combining to host this event for the first time. The Class 4A boys will be third on the course and start their race at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Class 4A girls’ race is the last one at 1:00 p.m.

Laramie head coach Greg Schabron feels good about the teams’ performance at last week's conference meet.

He says this year's state course looks like a pretty simple one.

“It’s kind of flat, one loop, and we’re going to get there the morning of, and take a look at it. We just have to keep them (the runners) calm. The other thing is with all the sickness that’s gone around, we’re trying to keep everybody healthy. That’s going to be key. I don’t want to jinx it, because right now we’re sitting pretty good, but that can change at a moment’s notice, too.”

Schabron likes not having run on this course because no one goes into it with any preconceived notions or ideas about it.

“A lot of times, if you have an athlete that maybe has a bad race, they get it in their head that I don’t like this course, I can’t do this course. Whereas, you roll the dice that first time out. They preview it, and then it’s just their tapered now. It’s brand new. The excitement’s there. That’s how we’re looking at it.”

Last year, the Laramie boys placed third, and the girls took sixth. Addison Forry was third, and Dominic Eberle placed eighth.

KOWB’s David Settle previewed the state championships with seniors Leah Schabron and Dominic Eberle. That’s in the video at the top of this story.

Laramie has a chance to bring home some trophies. Schabron feels the girls are a dark-horse contender, and the boys can be in the mix behind Star Valley and Cheyenne Central.

Individually, freshmen Claire Arens and Lainey Berryhill pace the LHS girls. Eberle and junior Gideon Moore lead the boys’ squad.

The last time Laramie won a cross-country state championship was in 2017 with the last of the boys’ six titles in a row. The only crown the girls’ team has won was in 2011.
