2023-24 Wyoming High School Wrestling Season Preview

The 2023-24 Wyoming High School wrestling season is here. Teams have started practice and look to begin competition this weekend from December 7-9.

Last year marked the first year of girls’ wrestling in the state. All schools competed for the same title, and Star Valley took home the trophy. The Braves were led by Veil Foreman who will be returning to defend her crown this season. There are eight other returning champions in their respective weight classes. Though Star Valley brings a lot back from their championship team as they look to repeat, word around the state is that girls’ programs are growing in numbers. Teams like Sheridan, Thunder Basin, Pinedale, Kemmerer, and Kelly Walsh all have a shot at their first girls’ wrestling title. 

Onto boys, let’s start with class 2A, which has eight returning champions. Kemmerer repeated as team champions in 2A last season. The Rangers only have one returning champion, Roany Proffit, but they will be in the hunt for a three-peat. Big Piney looks to dethrone Kemmerer. Coming off their third-place finish at state, the Punchers have a lot returning to their lineup, including 113-pound champion Jackie Meador, and several other state placers. 

3A also has eight returning champions for this season. Green River took home the 2023 3A championship trophy. The Wolves will look to repeat with two returning champions, Lucas Todd and Kale Knezovich. Pinedale looks to be a strong contender for that title with a lot returning from last year’s fourth-place team, including three champions. Evanston and Cody return many wrestlers from their state roster in order to be considered as contenders. 

Class 4A has the most returning champions with nine. Sheridan won the team title last season. The Broncs are led by returning champions, Dane Steel and Kelton Crow. They will have heavy competition from Thunder Basin and Star Valley, who finished second and third respectively last season at state. The Bolts have three champions coming back, the Braves have two. Natrona County could be a dark horse to keep an eye on this season.

Regionals will be held on February 16 and 17 at six schools across the state based on class and division. State Wrestling will be at the Ford Wyoming Center in Casper, from February 22 to 24.
