Horsley and Mellizo are the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week 8-27-24

A golfer and a tennis player snagged the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors for week two of the 2024-25 sports year. The recipients are Jordyn Horsley of Star Valley and Laramie’s Paulo Mellizo. Horsley won a golf invite with the lowest two-round score of the week. Mellizo was nearly perfect at No. 1 singles for the Plainsmen.

WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WINNERS FOR 8-27-24

Girls Winner

Horsley won the Pinedale Invite at the Rendezvous Meadows Ranch Golf Course. She shot the lowest combined two-round score last week. Horsley opened with a 73 and followed that with an 80 for the winning total of 153. Her margin of victory was three shots. Horsley also helped Star Valley take first in the team standings by over 100 shots.

WyoPreps visited with Jordyn about how she played, what went well, how she handled the lead, what she’s focused on, and more.

Boys Winner

Mellizo went 4-0 at the No. 1 singles position for Laramie. He lost only four games across the eight sets he played in victories over opponents from Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Sheridan, and Rawlins. Paulo was the runner-up at No. 1 singles at the state tournament last year.

WyoPreps spoke with Mellizo before practice on Tuesday. He assessed his play in the four matches, discussed what he’s doing to improve his game, and looked ahead to the rest of a fast-moving season.
