WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WINNERS 10-30-24
Girls Winners
Cooley won the 3A cross-country state championship last Saturday at the Little America course in Cheyenne. Cooley ran 19:08.2 and won by a margin of 30 seconds. The victory capped a big senior season for Cooley. She helped the Panthers take second in the team standings. She placed 13th at this same event last year.
WyoPreps spoke to Kinley about her performance last week. She discussed what it feels like to be a state champ, how she felt she ran compared to her strategy, her knowledge of the course entering the event, and more.
Our second girls’ winner was Jory. She helped the Dubois Rams to a big 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) of conference co-leader Burlington at home last Saturday. Jory had 18 kills and a .429 hitting percentage. She added 14 digs, one block, and one assist in the sweep. In set three, Jory had 11 kills on 15 attempts to help the Rams close the match. The junior co-captain was also honored for passing 500 kills in her prep career before the match.
In our conversation with Ava about last week, she touched on her effort in the match, how important the victory was, what contributed to her success, getting ready for regionals, and more.
Boys Winners
Lovell’s Davin Crosby turned in a terrific all-around game in the Bulldogs’ 47-20 win over No. 4 Cokeville. The victory wrapped up the No. 2 seed for Lovell and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Crosby threw for 180 yards and 3 TDs. He was intercepted once, but Davin made up for that with 3 interceptions on defense. He returned one of those for a touchdown. Crosby finished with 29 defensive points. Besides the pics, he had eight tackles, two of them solo and two pass breakups.
Crosby visited with WyoPreps about his performance against the Panthers. He described how the game played out for the team and him, how he felt he played on both sides of the ball, what led to his 3 interceptions, playing for his dad, his leadership from the QB spot, and more.
Finally, Jase Burton of Star Valley won his first cross-country state championship in cross country last Saturday. He won the Class 4A title by 32 seconds over his teammate and two-time defending champ, Habtamu Wetzel. Burton was the only runner with a time under 16 minutes. He ran 15:46.6. He helped the Braves win their third consecutive team title.
Burton chatted with WyoPreps about his first title, his strategy with the course, how training led to success, and more.
