The 2026 Wyoming American Legion Baseball season is here. Ten teams are making their season debut during the first week of the year. Along with a new season in the Cowboy State comes a new State Chairman. The State Commander appointed Jason Huggins as the new chairman. Huggins has spent the last two years as the Assistant State Chairman in Wyoming.

Huggins Steps In as Wyoming Legion Baseball Chairman

Huggins replaces Jack Simms, who stepped down after the 2025 season, on August 31, after three years at the helm. Jason has been part of Wyoming Legion Baseball as a player or coach since 1994, minus one year. He played for Sweetwater County back in the 1990s, and then has had coaching stops in Kemmerer, Laramie, Rock Springs, and Jackson. Huggins joined the Jackson Giants American Legion Post 43 baseball program in 2004. He was the B team coach for two seasons before becoming the Giants’ manager for 15 years. He stepped down from that position after the 2024 season. Huggins led the Giants to a runner-up finish in 2019. He was named Coach of the Year twice during his career, including in that 2019 season. Huggins was inducted into the Wyoming Legion Baseball Hall of Fame in 2021.

Huggins Took Time to Chat with WyoPreps

WyoPreps visited with the new State Chairman this week. We discussed moving into the new role. He said he’s got big shoes to fill and wants to continue to progress baseball in the state. That includes more teams in 2026 across its three levels versus last year, and he feels baseball is thriving in the state. He also described how his approach will be different from others, understands tough decisions must be made at various times, and is looking forward to the new season.

The Gillette Riders and Gillette Rustlers opened the 2026 season on Tuesday, April 7. The Cheyenne Sixers, Cheyenne Hawks, Laramie Rangers, Rock Springs Stallions, Sheridan Troopers, Sheridan Jets, Douglas Cats, and Wheatland Lobos also have games on the schedule during Week 1 of this new season.
