The Cheyenne Central boys basketball squad has been ranked #1 in our WyoPreps poll in 4A and went 3-0 in the James Johnson Tournament in Cheyenne over the weekend. The Tribe beat Kelly Walsh 64-42, Green River 68-33, and Rock Springs 73-60. Saturday's game vs. Rock Springs was entertaining but the Tribe struggled to close the door on the Tigers. Sam Shumway had a terrific game for Central as he threw in 32 points and he has been averaging 9.9 points a game so far this season.

Joe Sawyer had been throwing in 13 a game and is the nephew of former Burns High School star and Wyoming Cowboy player Gregg Sawyer. In addition to those two, Central gets 8 points per game from Chase Talich and Ryan Bradley so this is a pretty balanced group.

Cheyenne Central last won a 4A state championship back in 2021 but has missed the State Tournament in 3 of the last 4 years, despite records over .500. There's no shortage of motivation for this team and we talked with Shumway and Sawyer after their victory over Rock Springs. A win is a win!
