Madsen, Cooley, and Marney Cruise to 2025 State Cross Country Titles in Cheyenne [VIDEO]
Three individual favorites won the 2025 Wyoming High School Cross Country State Championship races last Saturday in Cheyenne at the Little America Golf Course and Resort. Cheyenne East junior Maggie Madsen, Powell junior Karee Cooley, and Big Horn sophomore Lyla Marney were the race champions in 4A, 3A, and 2A, respectively. All three won their race by comfortable margins. WyoPreps visited with the winners after their victories.
WYOPREPS 2025 CROSS COUNTRY STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
Madsen battled injuries throughout the 2025 season, but she overcame that and won the 4A girls’ race with a course record time of 18:17.7. It was the second straight title for Madsen. She won the race by nearly 46 seconds. Malea Adams-Case of Cheyenne Central was second at 19:03.4. Her teammate, Ella Montano, followed in third at 19:05.9. Lexi Longhurst from Kelly Walsh placed fourth at 19:11.7. Laramie’s Kieran Giraldo rounded out the top five in fifth at 19:18.1. Cheyenne Central rolled to its second straight team title with 42 points. It was the fourth in the last five years for the Indians and ninth in school history. Laramie was second, Kelly Walsh took third, and Star Valley finished fourth in the team standings. The full results for Class 4A are below.

Class 3A Cross Country State Championship Recap 2025
Karee Cooley made it two in a row for the Powell Panthers and the Cooley family with her win last Saturday. She crossed the line at 19:06.5 and joined her older sister Kinley (2024 winner) as a state champ. Cooley’s margin of victory was 24 seconds. Lander’s Dorothy Jensen placed second at 19:30.5. Cody took the next two spots with Hailie Schramm third at 19:54.6 and Reyna Jones fourth at 20:14.4. Fifth place went to Ava Tapia from Worland at 20:19.6. Cody was the 3A girls team champion for the second year in a row, sixth time in the last seven years, and eighth time in school history. They scored 35 team points. Powell was second, Buffalo was third, and Worland placed fourth. The full results for Class 3A are below.
Class 2A Cross Country State Championship Recap 2025
The last race of the day was 2A girls, and Big Horn’s Lyla Marney repeated as the individual champion in a dominant race. She placed first by 90 seconds. Marney’s winning time was 19:27.4. She led the Rams to the team crown, as well. Kelli McNiven of Burlington finished second at 20:57.6. Maci Lyons of Lusk was third at 20:58.8. Fourth place was Ella Marney (Lyla’s sister) at 21:22.8. Sihauna Sanchez from Saratoga took fifth at 21:32.3. Big Horn placed first in the team standings at 31 points. It was their first title in school history. Tongue River placed second, followed by Saratoga in third, and Wyoming Indian fourth. The full results for Class 2A are below.
