WyoPreps Game of the Week: #4 Meeteetse at #3 Burlington [VIDEO]
Our WyoPreps Game of the Week for small schools puts a top-five showdown and rivalry in Class 1A 6-man center stage. The third-ranked Burlington Huskies host the No. 4 Meeteetse Longhorns. The Huskies are 3-1 on the season and 3-0 at the top of the 6-man North Conference. The Longhorns are right behind at 3-0 this year and 2-0 in the league.
These rivals are separated by 36 miles. It’s a big deal in the Big Horn Basin along the Greybull River.
Burlington opened with a loss at No. 1 Little Snake River. They’ve rebounded with wins over Kaycee, Ten Sleep (by forfeit), and Hulett. Meeteetse has victories against Dubois, Hulett, and Ten Sleep.
WyoPreps previews the game with Meeteetse head coach Zeb Hagen and Burlington head coach Trent Aagard. Both discussed how their team is playing in the middle of the 2024 season, the progress they’re making, seeing different players step up, the rivalry aspect to this game, what they expect from each other’s teams, and a few keys to winning the game.
The Huskies are led by their defense, which is ranked third among 6-man teams. They allow only 209 yards and 25.3 points per game. On offense, Burlington’s power run game averages 205 yards per game. They add 120 yards through the air and rank No. 9 in total offense at 325 yards and 49.3 points per game. Joe Bassett and Jordan Broederlow lead the Huskies on the ground. The duo averages 117 yards per game and has 7 total TDs. Rykael Andrew has thrown four TD passes. Bassett anchors the defense at 15.7 defensive points per game.
Meeteetse leans heavily on a ground attack that is No. 2 in 6-man at 281 yards per game. The Longhorns average 385 yards and 53.3 points per game. They allow 275 yards and 30 points per game on defense. Jacob Moody runs for 141.7 yards per game and has scored 8 TDs. Max Potas is throwing for just over 100 yards per game. He has 3 TD passes to only one interception. On defense, Potas in No. 3 is the state at 28.3 defensive points per game. He scored 3 defensive touchdowns.
Friday afternoon will be the 65th meeting between the two schools on the football field. The Huskies have won two straight against the Longhorns and hold a 34-26 edge in the series. There have been four ties, and two other games were canceled or not played, according to wyoming-football.com.
The kick-off is at 2 p.m. at Husky Stadium in Burlington.
