Central’s Joe Sawyer Commits to Gillette College for Basketball
It took a while but Joe Sawyer from Cheyenne Central has committed to play basketball at Gillette College. Sawyer is the reigning Boys Gatorade Player of the Year in Wyoming as he averaged 15 points and 5 rebounds per game. He shot an amazing 61% from the floor and had an eventful summer as he helped Team Wyoming beat Montana in their annual series for the first time in 13 years. He also played in the Wyoming Coaches Association All-Star game. This past season, Central won the 4A State Championship with a 62-59 win over Laramie. The Tribe went 25-3 en route to that title.
In his junior year, Sawyer averaged 16 points and 6 rebounds per game as his team went 16-9. Sawyer had a pair of 27-point games in the 2022-23 season vs. Laramie and Sheridan.
Gillette College re-booted its basketball programs last season after sports were gutted at the school for the 2021-22 season. The Pronghorns were 27-5 this past season and made it to the Region IX Tournament semi-finals.
