PhotoFest: Southeast Outlasts Pine Bluffs in 9-Man Football
Two regional rivals meet in the regular season finale in 1A 9-Man football as Southeast played host to defending state champion Pine Bluffs. Both teams were going to the playoffs but there battling for a home postseason game.
In the first quarter, Pine Bluffs jumped in front on a 7-yard run for a touchdown by Ryan Mohren giving the Hornets a 7-0 lead. Southeast sprung to life in the 2nd quarter as T.J. had 2 rushing touchdowns and the Cyclones converted the two-point try twice so they led at halftime 16-7.
Southeast increased the lead in the 3rd quarter with a touchdown to make it 22-7 but Pine Bluffs got right back into the game in the 4th quarter as Mohren got into the end zone from the doorstep and quarterback Justin Lerwick threw a 33-yard TD pass to Abe Serrano so the Hornets trailed at this juncture 22-20.
Southeast put the game away as Ayden Desmond reeled off a 25-yard run for a score as the Cyclones won a thrilling game 30-20. Both teams finished the regular season 6-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play but Southeast is the #2 seed from the East and will host Riverside on Friday in round one of the playoffs. Pine Bluffs is the #3 seed from the East and will have a long road trip on Friday to Big Piney for their quarterfinal round game.
