For the second straight year, Laramie’s Maddy Stucky was chosen as the Gatorade Wyoming Volleyball Player of the Year. Stucky is the fourth Gatorade winner selected from Laramie High School. In its 39th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company announced the honor on Monday morning via a press release to the media.

Maddy Stucky signed with the University of Wyoming volleyball program in November. She plans to enroll at UW this month. Maddy joins her older sister, Alexis, as a back-to-back recipient of this award, which means a volleyball player from Laramie High School has received this honor for four straight years.

The 5-11 senior setter led Laramie to a 33-1 record and the Class 4A state championship last fall. Stucky finished the 2023 season with 801 assists, an average of 8.3 per set. She had 210 digs, 158 kills, 62 total blocks, and 47 service aces. Stucky is a three-time state champ and four-time all-state and all-conference honoree during her prep career. She finished high school volleyball with 3,039 assists.

In the release from The Gatorade Company, Sheridan High School head coach Kaitlyn Zarpentine gave Stucky some high praise.

“She’s a bulldog and her competitive drive is clear through the decisions she makes as a setter and how she holds her teammates accountable.

Stucky maintains a 3.5 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered locally as a youth and AAU volleyball coach and on behalf of a local food drive. Stucky is a former president of the Wyoming Quarter Horse Youth Association. She has also donated time to a fundraiser to benefit cancer research.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. It distinguishes Stucky as Wyoming’s best high school volleyball player. She is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award to be announced later this month.

Two-time winner Stucky joins recent winners Alexis Stucky of Laramie (2020-21 & 21-22) and Danilynn Schell (2019-20 & 18-19) of Kelly Walsh, among the state’s list of former Gatorade Award winners.

As part of Gatorade’s commitment to breaking down barriers in sport, every Player of the Year also receives a grant to donate to a social impact partner. To date, Gatorade Player of the Year winners’ grants have totaled more than $4.9 million across more than 1,600 organizations.
