Thunder Basin Volleyball Team Looking to Make the Big Step
Thunder Basin was oh-so-close to winning the 4A Volleyball state championship last season but dropped a grueling 5-set match to Laramie, 25-23, 25-16, 25-27, 21-26, and 15-11. The Bolts finished the season at 33-5 and so far in 2024, they have won 10 of their first 11 matches.
Thunder Basin's team is built around two-time All-State setter Piper Martin who makes things happen on the floor and also is the team's emotional barometer. They also have a talented senior hitter in Taylee Cundy plus junior Reece McGrath who is productive in the back row.
The Bolts went 5-1 in the Gillette Tournament over the weekend with wins over Burns, Newcastle, and Rapid City Christian on Friday, with victories over Rapid City Central and Cody on Saturday. Thunder Basin lost to Laramie in the gold bracket championship 23-25, 25-11, and 15-8.
We talked with Piper Martin and Taylee Cundy and they expressed confidence in their team to reach the top of the 4A mountain.
