Whaley Smashes Records, Burgess Fuels Broncs in WyoPreps Weekly Honors [VIDEO]
A thrower who set records and a standout soccer player were chosen as the first spring season WyoPreps Athletes of the Week. Greybull junior Wyatt Whaley and Sheridan senior Christian Burgess were the winners. Whaley broke a school record in one event and a personal record in another event in just her second action of the outdoor track season. Burgess had four goals and five assists for the Broncs in their first two conference matches of the 2026 season. WyoPreps analyzed performances from the competition week of March 23 through March 28, 2026, and chose these two student-athletes. Previous weeks are not part of the decision.

Girls’ Winner
Whaley won the discus and shot-put events at last week’s Burlington Track Meet. She made history by breaking a long-standing school record in the discus. Wyatt’s best toss went 116 feet-3 inches. It broke a record that had stood since 1978, 48 years. With that toss, she won by over six feet in the discus. Whaley also won the shot put with a personal best toss of 38 feet-2.5 inches. She won that event by over seven feet. Wyatt’s effort helped Greybull finish second in the team standings, just 1.5 points behind the team winner.
Whaley’s nominating coach said, “Her combination of historic achievement and personal growth highlights an exceptional week of competition. Whaley’s performances demonstrate both her elite talent and her continued commitment to excellence, making her a deserving nominee for Athlete of the Week.” We agree.
WyoPreps spoke with Wyatt about her performance last week. She said she could feel the big toss coming during practice leading into the track meet. Whaley discussed her reaction, her training, her improvement through the years, how she got going with throwing, and more.

Boys’ Winner
Burgess led the No. 3 Sheridan Broncs to a 2-0 start in 4A East Conference play last week. They beat Cheyenne South, 12-0, and Laramie 3-nil. Burgess had a hat trick hero with 3 goals and 3 assists against the Bison. He followed that with 1 goal and 2 assists in the victory over Laramie. Sheridan was off to a 3-0 start entering Week 3 of the 2026 season.
Christian’s nominating coach said, “He has demonstrated his ability to impact any game against any opponent as his statistics have not been amassed in an outlier game but consistently productive game after game.”
WyoPreps caught up with Burgess to reflect on last weekend. Christian felt he and the team played well to start league action, described his impact with his performances, discussed some plays that stood out to him, his love for soccer, and more.
Congratulations to Wyatt and Christian on being picked as the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week!
