A 28-year-old Cheyenne man is in serious legal trouble after police reportedly caught him with nearly 36 grams of methamphetamine.

Meth Bust Leads to Felony Charge

According to a booking sheet, police arrested James Paul Smith in the 1600 block of West Lincolnway at 3:33 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.

It's alleged that Smith possessed 35.87 grams of methamphetamine.

Smith was booked into the Laramie County Detention Center and subsequently charged with felony possession of methamphetamine, a crime punishable by up to seven years in prison, up to a $15,000 fine, or both.

Initial Court Appearance

On Tuesday, Feb. 10, Smith was seen in Laramie County Circuit Court in front of Judge Antoinette Williams on the charge.

Williams appointed Smith a public defender and set his preliminary hearing for Friday, Feb. 20, at 9:45 a.m.

Williams then asked for the state's position regarding bond.

"Your honor, 35 grams ... that's extremely serious," the state said. "The state believes that Mr. Smith presents a clear danger to the community, and the state believes that a $25,000 cash bond would be required in this matter."

Bond Set at $50K Cash

"Based on Mr. Smith's criminal history within this jurisdiction alone, the court's going to set the bond at $50,000 cash," said Williams.

Please remember that all defendants are innocent until proven guilty.
