For the first time in years, you might see Laramie County Sheriff's Deputies on horseback patrolling during Cheyenne Frontier Days.

That's according to a post on the LCSO Facebook page.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Brandon Warner says there are currently three deputies who are active in the mounted unit. The deputies own the horses and cover all expenses and cost of caring for the horses.

Mounted Deputies Aren't Just About Western Tradition

So are the mounted deputies just a way of paying homage to the western traditions celebrated during CFD? Warner says that while the move might have some public relations value, they also offer practical benefits from logistics viewpoint.

For one thing, Warner says mounted deputies help deputies have better vision in a crowd of people, and crowds tend to make way for deputies mounted on horses more than they would for those on foot.

In terms of public relations, Warner says people are often more willing to talk to mounted law enforcement than deputies on foot.

LCSO POST: "THE MOUNTED UNIT IS BACK! It had been disbanded for a few years, but Sheriff Kozak reinstated the team. They are downtown today and the remainder of the week to answer questions and help folks discover the many events while helping CPD with calls in the area."
