The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities will be conducing it's annual water distribution system and hydrant flushing next week, weather permitting.

According to a BOPU news release ''Hydrant flushing helps to maintain water quality and keeps Cheyenne’s water fresh. This preventative maintenance allows crews to assess the condition of the water distribution system and fire hydrants.  It also helps keep insurance premiums manageable for Cheyenne’s residents. Information gathered by crews is used by the Insurance Service office to rate Cheyenne’s fire suppression abilities.''

The BOPU says the process scrubs water mains of film and sediment. It can also cause discolored water.

What To Do If Your Water Is Discolored

The BOPU says that while the water is safe, it can cause discolored laundry. It advises that people take the following steps if their water is discolored:

  • Wait until the nearby hydrant flushing is complete
  • Clean out faucet aerators or filters
  • Allow COLD water to run through faucets or outside spigots until the water is clear
