City Says New Sidewalks Will Improve Access To A Cheyenne Park
Cheyenne City officials say new sidewalks in the Lincoln Park area will improve access in and around the park.
That's according to a news release from the city.
The release says the new sidewalks include curb ramps that are compliant with the federal Americans With Disabilities Act. They follow 7th and 8th Streets and Evans Avenue.
“This is a great improvement for South Cheyenne and addresses a need in that neighborhood,” said Amy Gorbey, the City’s Community Development Manager. “The new sidewalks improve access to the park’s amenities and will make it easier for neighbors to get to and enjoy their park.”
The Project Was Paid For With Federal Funds
The project was paid for with $71,500 in federal Community Block Grant money that had originally been requested by a Cheyenne non-profit organization. That organization's projects ended up not happening. so the city decided to us them for the Lincoln Park project after hearing about the need for the project from city residents.
In the same news release the city announced plans to use CDBG funds to replace aging playground equipment at Optimist Park. According to the release, that will feature new, ADA-compliant equipment including new safety surfacing, concrete pathways, and enhancements to the overall playground area. Installation of the new equipment is planned by this summer.
“Cheyenne’s parks are for everyone, and we’re always looking for ways to improve access and amenities in our park system,” said Jason Sanchez, director of the City’s Community Recreation and Events Department.
History Of Lincoln Park
Lincoln Park has a long history in Cheyenne. It was created after Johnson School, in the building that now house Destiny Church, was built in the 1920s. The park was named by students at Johnson School.
