High-Speed Chase in Cheyenne Leads to Felony Charge for Utahn
A 53-year-old Salt Lake City, Utah man is facing multiple charges following a high-speed chase in Cheyenne.
According to a booking sheet, police at about 12:02 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 attempted to stop James M. Rock for conducting an improper turn and lane change.
Police: Rock Drove Into Oncoming Traffic, Nearly Struck Deputy
Police say Rock fled in his vehicle, leading them on a high-speed chase, during which he drove the wrong way into oncoming traffic and nearly struck a Laramie County Sheriff's deputy attempting to deploy spike strips.
Rock eventually crashed his vehicle and was arrested.
Police: Rock Admitted to Drinking 6 Vodka Drinks, Had Marijuana in His Vehicle
Police say Rock smelled of alcohol and admitted to drinking six vodka drinks that night but refused to cooperate with standardized field sobriety testing.
Rock reportedly consented to a blood draw and was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, where his blood was drawn and he was cleared for jail.
Police say an inventory search of Rock's vehicle revealed a misdemeanor amount of marijuana.
Rock Charged With Aggravated Eluding, Reckless Driving, DUI, and Possession of Marijuana
Rock was subsequently charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer - attempts to cause or intentionally or knowingly causes bodily injury to any other person, a felony punishable by up to a $5,000 fine, up to five years in prison, or both.
Rock was also charged with three misdemeanors, including reckless driving, DUI - combination of controlled substance and alcohol, and possession of marijuana.
Bond Set at $10K Cash
Rock made his initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Friday afternoon, during which his bond was set at $10,000 cash and his preliminary hearing was scheduled for Friday, Oct. 4 at 10:30 a.m.
