Crosswalk Lighting Memorial For Student Killed By Motorist Planned
A crosswalk lighting ceremony is slated for November 7 to honor a McCormick Junior High School student who was struck and killed in a crosswalk outside the school a few years ago.
13-year-old Makaili "Mak" Evans was on his way to school when a woman driving a Ford Escape eastbound on Western Hills Boulevard hit him in the crosswalk in front of McCormick on Nov. 5, 2021. Evans was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center with critical injuries where he was later pronounced dead.
Janelle Jones is doing everything she can to prevent the tragic death of her son from being repeated. She has launched the ''For Mak" program to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving and work to improve school zone safe.
Taco Johns, Microsoft To Be Recognized
A news release from ForMak says Taco John's and Microsoft will be honored "for their generous donations towards installing the HAWK (High Intensity Activated Crosswalk) systems at the memorial.
The event will be held at 3:30 p.m. on November 7 at the crosswalk at the corner of Western Hills Blvd. and Moccasin Ave. Guests will include Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins and Laramie County School District#1 Superintendant Dr. Stephen Newton.
