Wyoming Woman Killed, 1 Injured After Pickup Crashes Into Tree
A Wyoming woman was killed and another person injured last week when their pickup crashed into a tree in Fremont County, the Wyoming Highway Patrol says.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. on Aug. 2, 2024, at milepost 78 on U.S. 26/U.S. 287, about 22 miles southeast of Dubois near Crowheart.
According to a fatality crash summary, a Ford F-250 was eastbound when the driver lost control of the pickup.
"The Ford tripped and vaulted into a tree, and its roof impacted the trunk," the summary reads. "The Ford dropped to the ground, where it came to rest on its roof."
The crash left 44-year-old Elaine Whittenberger, who was not wearing her seat belt, dead and the other occupant injured. It's unknown which one of them was driving.
Speed, Driver Inattention Possibly to Blame for Fatal Crash
The summary lists speed and driver inattention as possible contributing factors.
Whittenberger is the 52nd reported person to die on Wyoming's highways so far this year.
