Hurricane Force Winds, Heavy Rain, Hail Possible In SE Wyoming Today
The Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service says winds of 75 miles per hour are possible in southeast Wyoming today, especially around Interstate 25 and eastward.
There is also the possibility of a Derecho for the first time in four years.
The agency issued a Special Weather Statement on Tuesday morning which included the following:
- Significant Wind Threat Expected Today. Especially east of I-25 into western Nebraska. A line of strong to severe storms will form along the cold front advancing through the region today. The main concern with this line will be strong, damaging winds, with gusts over 70-80 MPH possible in the strongest storms. An isolated wind gust could reach up to 85mph in the Nebraska Panhandle this afternoon/evening.
- A Derecho is expected to form along an advancing, strong cold front as it pushes across southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska this afternoon and evening. An Enhanced Risk for Severe Weather has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for portions of western Nebraska. A Marginal and Slight Risk also remain present for other areas of southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska.
Windy conditions will likely persist behind the front, with High Wind Warnings & Watches in effect for portions of southeast Wyoming.
The agency posted the following on its website:
A strong weather system that is atypical for this late in the season regarding severe weather is expected to sweep through the area today, along with a strong cold front. This front is expected to produce a line of strong to severe thunderstorms, which will move east-northeast across the high plains through Tuesday evening. 🚨🚨🚨 Weather forecasts are trending higher with this event becoming a potential derecho, which we have not had in our area since June 6, 2020. This will be a day to stay weather aware since the thunderstorms will have the potential to create significant wind gusts up to or exceeding 65 knots/75mph. 🌬️Although brief, but heavy rainfall and small hail are expected with this line of storms, the primary concern will be damaging winds with wind gusts potentially greater than 70 MPH. Areas in the Nebraska Panhandle highlighted in the oval have the highest probability of seeing the strongest wind gusts later today. ☈ Thunderstorms will begin across Carbon and Albany counties this morning and 12 PM, and eventually move into the I-25 corridor between 2PM and 6 PM this afternoon. Areas in the Nebraska Panhandle can expect timing of the severe thunderstorms between 5PM and 8PM.
