Eklund, who was a Republican, had served in the legislature since 2011. He was perhaps best known as a strong supporter of Wyoming agriculture.

Gov. Mark Gordon Calls Eklund "A Steadfast Advocate For Agriculture"

Governor Mark Gordon issued the following statement on Eklund's passing.

“Jennie and I are deeply saddened by the news of our friend Representative John Eklund’s passing. Wyoming has lost a dedicated public servant, a steadfast advocate for agriculture, and a man whose kindness touched everyone who had the privilege to know him.  Jennie and I hold his wife Suzie and the entire Eklund family close in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray had this to say:

“I’m deeply saddened to hear of Representative Eklund’s passing. Representative Eklund’s work on agricultural issues and on protecting Wyoming’s producers has been very important for our state. It was an honor to be able to serve with him in the legislature and work with him on a number of issues. I’m continuing to pray for Representative Eklund’s entire family.”

Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Dale Steenbergen praised Eklund for "A Race Well Run":

"It is rare in the political world that you run across someone who served just for the betterment of humanity.  Perhaps I stated that a little wrong, it is rare that you run across an elected official whose service is only dedicated to his family, his community, his family, his nation and his faith.   It is even more rare to find the individual that has that commitment to service and exhibits that commitment with a demeanor of servant leadership that shows concern and empathy for all he encounters.  While this human sounds impossible in fact it was the person of John Eklund.
Today we learned of John's passing.  Certainly, the community the state this nation and mankind are worse off for Johns passing.  Representative Eklund you will be missed.  Prayers for John’s family and friends in this time of loss and God’s grace upon them.
Godspeed Representative Eklund, your race has been run and it was run well. "

Speaker of the Wyoming House Chip Neiman added these comments:

It is with deep sadness that Joni and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of our colleague, John Eklund. John was not only a friend but also a tremendous source of support to me in my role as a legislator. We pray for his family during this time of loss and remember John’s unwavering love for his Savior, his family, and agriculture.

"He cherished his grandchildren, and nothing made him prouder than sharing stories about their involvement with livestock. John leaves behind a legacy of love and respect that will endure through his family."
