Cheyenne Teenagers Using Toy Guns Prompt Report Of Shots Fired
Cheyenne Police were called out on Tuesday evening around 6 p.m. on a report of shots being fired near the 3500 Block of East Lincolnway
CPD spokeswoman Alex Farkas says the caller believed they had been shot by a male in a white Nissan.
Police Found Suspect Vehicle, Ordered Occupants Outside
Farkas says an officer soon found the suspect vehicle and conducted a high-risk traffic stop at a gas station on East 12th Street. Officers ordered the four teenagers in the vehicle to come out, which they did.
A search of the vehicle turned up two Orbeez toy guns, one of which had been painted black, making it look like a real gun. Police issued citations to the teens and released them to their parents.
In the words of the news release:
Fortunately, no one was seriously injured. However, the incident caused disruption in the community. Some individuals believed they were being shot at with real guns, which led to a large police response. A vehicle was also damaged after being shot at.
We encourage young people to slow down and think about how their actions may affect others. What may seem like a joke or a game can quickly escalate and cause fear or harm.
Farkas says police encourage parents to discuss the potential risks of this kind of behavior with their children.
