Maren Morris Highlights Powerful Women of All Kinds in ‘Girl’ Music Video [WATCH]
Maren Morris is making a powerful statement with the music video for her brand-new single, "Girl." Readers can press play above to watch the clip, which Morris dropped on Thursday afternoon (Jan. 24).
Directed by Dave Meyers, Morris' "Girl" music video follows a multitude of stories and snippets of women's lives: a fighter, a little girl burying a loved one, a young woman moving out, a dancer, an artist -- even Morris herself. Throughout the clip, there's a feeling of strength, and by the end, viewers get the overwhelming sense that, as Morris sings, "everyone's gonna be okay" -- even if, at that moment, things seem less than okay.
Perhaps the most telling moment comes at the very beginning, though: "I think it just comes down to -- we don't want more than everyone else," Morris says at the start of the "Girl" music video, "we just want the same as everyone else."
Morris co-wrote "Girl" alongside Sarah Aarons -- who also co-penned "The Middle," the country star's 2018 crossover smash collaboration with producer Zedd and electronic duo Grey -- as well as Greg Kurstin. Kurstin also has credit for producing the new song.
"It felt like such a timely song for now," Morris tells ABC, noting that the song began as a letter to a friend. "[In the letter, I was asking], 'Why are we competing against one another? Is it ourselves? Is it this industry? Is it the world?'" -- and then, she realized: "I don't think I am writing this to her. I am writing this to myself."
"Girl" is Morris' fifth career single and the first taste of her forthcoming sophomore album. Morris first hinted that she was in the studio working on a new record in April. Throughout 2018, she shared a couple of new songs, including "Flavor" and "To Hell and Back," in her live shows; in November, she posted a snapshot of herself and her manager listening to the finished project, which she's nicknamed "MM2."
In March, Morris will begin her Girl: The World Tour trek. Cassadee Pope and RaeLynn will join her as opening acts.
