Pay Raises For Cheyenne City Council, Mayor On Committee Agenda

Proposals to increase the salaries for Cheyenne City Council members and the Mayor of Cheyenne are slated for consideration by the Cheyenne City Council Finance Committee on Monday.

Regardless of how the committee votes on the proposals, the full city council will have the final word on third and final reading. The proposals have already passed two readings in the council.

The ordinances would raise the mayor's annual salary from the current $95,700 per year to $110,000 annually, starting on Jan. 1, 2025. Salaries for Council members would double from the current $1,000 per month to $2,000.

However, the increase for council members would only take effect after the next election for their seat. State law prohibits elected officials from receiving a pay raise until they have either been elected or re-elected to office following the raise.

That means that while council members who are elected in November would be eligible for raises on Jan. 1, others would have to wait to receive it until after their council seat is up for election. Council members could also choose not to take the raise.

The proposed ordinances still face a third and final reading before the full city council that will decide whether they are approved.
