Recently Passed Florida Law Will Leave Greyhounds Needing Homes
If you're planning on adding a furry four-legged friend to your family in the next year or so, consider adopting a Greyhound!
During the 2018 midterm election, Florida voted for a constitutional amendment to end dog racing in the state. Florida hosts 11 of the 17 dog racing tracks in the US. This means that in the coming months, as many as 8,000 greyhound dogs will need adoption and forever homes as they retire from the track.
Greyhounds are a goofy breed. They are very fast and are trained to chase small animals, but they're also known by aficionados as "Couch Potatoes," and excellent family dogs. They need time and room to run occasionally, but are perfectly content hanging out with their humans as they binge Netflix, going on hikes, and wearing cute sweaters.
These lovable former athletes will need homes, so keep an eye out for retired race dogs at your local animal shelter, rescue, or if you want to be proactive, you can contact adopt-a-greyhound.org.
