Crews with the Wyoming Department of Transportation are at work clearing snow off of WYO 130 over the Snowy Range pass.

It’s quite the process. WYDOT Maintenance Area Supervisor Tye Fix said that first, crews send dozers over the top of the road to get the snow to about four feet deep. Then rotary plows, with large, circular blades, grind up the snow and ice on the road. What’s left behind after that is cleared away by snowplows, which many Wyomingites have seen on the state’s highways after a snow storm.

This year, large chucks of ice are making for slow going, but Fix said they are still on track to reach their goal of opening by Memorial Day weekend.

The crews on the Laramie side of WYO 130 aim to reach Lake Marie in time to get the road open by Memorial Day weekend. Fix said from the opening gate where they start, it's about a nine mile stretch.
