What’s Your Favorite Part of the Memorial Day Weekend – Survey of the Day?
Memorial Day, and this weekend has come to mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people in our nation. The day itself was originally known as “Decoration Day” and originated after the American Civil War in 1868. It’s celebrated on the last Monday in May and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many think of the Memorial Day weekend as a time to reflect on patriotism and honor fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives in service to our country. Others view it as a time to relax or getaway, as an “unofficial” start to summer.
For pride and pageantry, numerous cities and towns across the US will have a parade or special ceremony, with military personnel or members of veterans organizations often participating, including Laramie.
It’s also viewed as the beginning of the summer vacation season. In fact, AAA estimates that 34.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend. Of those, 88 percent will will take to the nation’s roadways, which is up 1.2 percent over last year. Meanwhile, a 5.5 percent decrease in air travel is expected with more than 2.5 million or 7 percent of holiday travelers flying somewhere this weekend.
There’s also other traditions that come about with this annual holiday weekend, like the running of the Indianapolis 500, which takes place every Sunday of the Memorial Day weekend. And let’s not forget about all the barbecue and other food that will be consumed this weekend.
