Underwood and Ludacris co-wrote "The Champion" with Brett James and Chris DeStefano in 2017; Jim Jonsin produced the song. The pair originally released the track in early 2018, for NBC to use during their coverage of Super Bowl LII and the 2018 Winter Olympics.
"When we were writing "The Champion," our main focus was to celebrate athletes at the top of their game, but we also wanted the song to resonate with people in their everyday lives,” Underwood says. “We hope the lyrics will inspire people to push themselves beyond their limits to conquer anything they are trying to accomplish or overcome. There’s a champion in every single one of us!”
Underwood was on hand at the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards to receive the 2018 Hero Award. The honor was bestowed in recognition of her charity work: She founded the C.A.T.S (Checotah Animal, Town and School) Foundation to benefit her hometown in Oklahoma and, with husband Mike Fisher, has since become a supporter of Danita's Children, an organization that benefits children in Haiti.
Underwood wasn't the only country artist to take home a trophy at the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards: Florida Georgia Line and Bebe Rexha's "Meant to Be" won Radio Disney Country Favorite Song, while Kelsea Ballerini and Carly Pearce won Radio Disney Country Favorite Artist and Radio Disney Country Best New Artist, respectively. Kelly Clarkson also received the 2018 Icon Award, in honor of her musical contributions and legacy.
