A Colorado man charged with felony theft received a one year split sentence in Albany County District Court today.

Stephen Reid’s bond will be revoked will be remanded over to the Albany County Detention Center, where he will remain until a bed date at a clinically managed high intensity drug treatment program is secured. Once Reid successfully completes the program, he will begin three years of supervised probation and will participate in the Albany County Drug Court.

Reid pleaded guilty to one count of felony theft as part of a plea agreement. In exchange, the state agreed to recommend the drug court program and that Reid be charged as a first offender. Albany County District Court Judge Tori Kricken agreed that treatment was in order for Reid to address his serious drug addiction issues, but said other factors such as Reid’s significant criminal history made it inappropriate to charge him as a first offender.

“This isn’t a situation where the court can agree no felony charge is warranted,” Kricken said. Kricken said one of the biggest factors in this case is Reid’s severe addiction and that Reid himself said he wouldn’t have committed this crime if he had not been under the influence of drugs.

Reid apologized to the court.

“This is the worst decision I ever made and I am looking forward to getting treatment,” Reid said. “I apologize. I feel awful for what I’ve done.”

Reid was arrested after burglarizing a home in July 2016 with his then girlfriend, Holly Norris.

Kricken also ordered that Reid complete 100 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the victims. Kricken also ordered that Reid not see Holly Norris, unless it was necessary to see Norris in order to see the child they have together. Kricken said Norris was a negative influence on Reid and would jeopardize his chances of success.

Reid will also split $1,001 in restitution to the victims with Norris.
