Commercial Truck Driver Killed in Crash on Interstate 80
A rollover crash on Interstate 80 near Elk Mountain left one man dead Monday afternoon.
William Couch, 73, of Oklahoma City, Okla. died in the crash that occurred at 2:46 p.m. Monday near mile post 250 on Interstate 80 westbound, about five miles west of Elk Mountain.
According to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Couch was driving a 2015 Freightliner commercial truck towing a trailer west on I-80 and the truck drifted off the interstate to the north.
The truck was overcorrected and slid off the highway into a ditch. As the truck slid, the trailer split in half and the truck tipped and rolled over.
Couch died at the scene despite wearing his seat belt.
The Patrol is still investigating contributing factors in the crash. Couch was the 38th person killed on Wyoming highways in 2016. The same period in 2015 saw 59 highway deaths statewide.
