Cow Moose Falls Into Jackson Business’s Basement Entryway

A cow moose fell into the basement entrance of a Jackson business Thursday morning.

Wardens from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Jackson field office responded to the incident along with deputies from the Teton County Sheriff's Office.

Wyoming Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Mark Gocke said the moose fell into the lower entrance way of a business in Jackson and got stuck.

Gocke said Game and Fish received a call the night before regarding the moose. It had an injured leg, but wardens figured that it would be OK.

"It was a very old cow moose," Gocke said. "It had a lot of ticks on it. It was emaciated."

Game and Fish employees sedated the moose in order to remove it from the entryway. It died while being taken to the National Elk Refuge near Jackson.

It was just one incident in what Gocke said has been a rough winter for moose in the area.

Moose typically come down from the mountains and winter in the valley. This year has seen more snow than average, so they're finding their way into towns in Teton County. Gocke said Game and Fish has received at least 30 calls in the Jackson area regarding moose this winter.

That's the most he can remember in single winter.

"That's the downside of our job," Gocke said. "This winter, in particular, has been hard on them."
