A 30-year-old Denver man convicted of trying to have sex with a 13-year-old Laramie girl has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, the United States Attorney's Office announced late Wednesday afternoon.

According to trial evidence and court documents, Gabriel Estrada used a chat website to meet up with who he believed to be a 13-year-old girl living in Laramie for sex, not knowing he was chatting with an undercover agent.

Sexting With an Undercover Agent

Estrada messaged the 13-year-old persona asking if she would have sex with him and went on to ask her if she had a friend who would like to join them in the sexual encounter and about her sexual experience.

After confirming the 13-year-old persona would engage in sexual acts with him, Estrada drove the two hours from his apartment in Denver to Laramie.

Estrada Arrested + Convicted

Estrada arrived in Laramie with two condoms and was arrested by police officers, who seized his iPhone containing text messages to the 13-year-old persona.

On Oct. 25, 2024, a federal jury convicted Estrada of attempting to entice a minor to engage in illegal sexual activity.

"The Internet can be a dangerous place for our children because of people like this defendant, a fully grown man who wanted to have sex with a 13-year-old girl and did everything he could to make that happen," said U.S. Attorney Eric Heimann.

"The United States Attorney’s Office will continue to support proactive law enforcement actions aimed at identifying and arresting individuals who are ready, willing, and eager to sexually abuse children," he added.

5 Years of Supervised Release

Estrada will be subject to five years of supervised release once he's released from prison.
