PhotoFest Review! State 1A/2A Basketball
Our next 2023 review is the State 1A/2A Basketball tournament in Casper back in March. On the girl's side, a pair of teams won state titles for the first time so those teams will be remembered for eternity by their respective schools.
Burns prevailed in 2A with a 48-36 win over southeast rival Lingle-Fort Laramie to take the podium. Daljit Kaur led Burns with 16 points and 15 rebounds. LFL was paced by Natalie Speckner with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Burns finished the year under .500 at 14-15 while Lingle Fort Laramie was 20-8. Sundance took 3rd with a 68-63 win over Tongue River, Sundance went 16-10 and Tongue River 18-9. Rocky Mountain took 5th and finished the season 19-7 with a 52-30 win over Shoshoni. The Wranglers wrapped up the season 14-15,
In 1A girls, Upton finally broke through beating nemesis Southeast 59-54, Sophie Louderback was Upton's leading scorer with 15 points and 9 rebounds as the Bobcats concluded the year at 23-2. Southeast received 16 points from Brenna Herring as the Cyclones were 27-3 this last season. Cokeville beat Burlington for 3rd place 64-47 Cokeville went 16-10 while Burlington finished 20-6. Little Snake River defeated Encampment for 5th 42-39. LSR was 14-10 on the season, Encampment 14-11.
On the boy's side, Pine Bluffs repeated as the 2A champion with a 49-38 victory over Big Horn thanks to 24 points from Stu Lerwick. The Hornets were 26-3 while Big Horn wrapped things up at 22-3. The Rams were led in the championship game by Caleb Gibson with 13. Tongue River placed 3rd in the tournament beating Wind River 76-62. TR was 22-5 on the season with WR 16-10. Wright defeated Greybull for 5th 71-63 with Wright going 20-10 on the season and Greybull 13-13.
In the 1A boys championship game, Burlington posted a 54-35 win over Upton for their first state title since 2017, The Huskies were 27-3 on the year and were led in scoring in the title match-up by Carson Jones with 17. Upton got 13 points from Ethan Schiller and concluded the year 21-5. Saratoga who finished 23-1 took 3rd with a 63-50 win over Cokeville as the Panthers ended the season 13-13. Farson-Eden beat Southeast 57-55 for 5th. FE was 8-17 on the season and SE was 17-10.
