Even by Wyoming's windblown standards, Thursday's wind storm was on for the books.

According to the Cheyenne office of the National Weather Service, a wind gust of 109 miles per hour was recorded near Chugwater

Just for comparison, windspeeds of 74 miles per hour are considered "hurricane force."

National Weather Service Posts Top Windspeeds From March 12

The agency posted the following on Facebook

- Today's wind event was one for the record books. Here's a look at the highest gusts recorded across the area. The peak gust was 109 mph along I-25 7.5 miles south of Chugwater. Numerous other gusts exceeding 90 mph were measured as welll.
Cheyenne topped out at 92mph at 11:51am (measured at the airport). This was the strongest wind gust ever measured at the Cheyenne weather station since reliable records have been kept (mid 1990s). The previous highest wind gust recorded here was 89 mph on 1/13/2021.
Laramie topped out at 81 mph (at the airport), which tied with 1/13/2021 for the 4th strongest wind gust recorded at the station since the 1990s. Laramie's record stands at 90 mph set on 6/27/2017.
While the extreme 90+ mph are coming to an end, this wind event still has a long ways to go. Expect strong winds along and west of I-25 to continue through Saturday evening. However, winds will not be as strong as what we observed today.
