Today (Oct. 13) marks the 20th anniversary of John Michael Montgomery’s debut album ‘Life’s a Dance.’ It was the sole million seller for a new country artist that year.

‘Life’s a Dance’ yielded a few hit singles, most notably ‘I Love the Way You Love Me,’ which peaked at No. 1 on the country charts. The title track topped out at No. 4, and was compared to Garth Brooks‘ ‘The Dance,’ while ‘Beer and Bones’ only charted as high as No. 21.

The album was not just a commercial success. It was also bestowed an important industry accolade, as ‘I Love the Way You Love Me’ was awarded ‘Single of the Year’ status by the Academy of Country Music.

When all was said and done, the album earned a triple platinum certification for three million copies old.

Montgomery was praised for his lower register and compared to true country legends like George Jones and Merle Haggard, but he and his music were also viewed as a being groomed for a slicker, pop country crowd. Can’t win ‘em all.
