Wyoming Medical Marijuana Petition Drive Soldiers On
The effort to legalize medical marijuana in Wyoming is not over by a long shot.
The petition drive is still alive, said Amber Sparks of the 420 Wyoming Political Action Committee.
"We are pushing really hard to try to collect every signature we can in the next week and double our efforts," Sparks said. "We've got boots on the ground, so we're working our butts off."
The petition drive began in earnest six months ago.
Recent news stories saying the effort has failed are wrong, she said.
Signatures are still being collected by 420 Wyoming, the state chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), and Wyoming Women for the Legalization of Cannibis and Hemp.
They need about 25,600 signatures of registered Wyoming voters by Feb. 8 to put the measure on the November 2016 general election ballot. They have collected about 7,000 so far.
But if they don't collect enough by Feb. 8, Sparks said they still have until February 2017 to gather enough signatures to put it on the November 2018 ballot.
The initiative would allow medical marijuana to be legal, and it has nothing to do with the legalization of the recreational use of marijuana, she said.
