
Thunder Basin Girls, Cheyenne East Boys Win 2026 4A Indoor Track Crowns
The Thunder Basin girls and Cheyenne East boys captured the team titles at the 2026 Wyoming High School Indoor Track 4A State Championships last Thursday and Friday in Gillette. The Bolts won five events on the way to their first indoor track championship in school history. The Thunderbirds won six events en route to the second crown in program history.

Grace Miller led the Thunder Basin girls’ effort. She won the 55-meter dash and tied the state record time of 7.10 seconds. Miller added a second victory in the 200 meters at 25.26 seconds. The other champions for the Bolts were Claire Lubben in the triple jump. Her best leap was 36-7.50. That was nearly a foot longer than second place. Lillyann Melton took first in the shot put. Her best toss was 41-6.25. Thunder Basin also took first in the 4x200 relay with a new state record time of 1:43.21.
The Bolts scored 134 points over the two-day competition. They beat defending champion Laramie by three points (131). Kelly Walsh placed third with 90 points, and Cheyenne Central was fourth with 64.
Laramie’s Lainey Berryhill defended her titles in the 400- and 800-meter races. She won 400 at 57.80 seconds and the 800 with a time of 2:21.75, over two seconds ahead of second place. Laramie also captured the 4x400-meter relay with a state record time of 4:02.38. That lowered the time by over three seconds. LHS took first in the Sprint Medley Relay at 4:19.36.
Cheyenne East junior Maggie Madsen was a two-event winner. She took both the distance races. Madsen placed first in the 1600 meters for the third straight year at 5:09.61. She finished first in the 3200 meters with a time of 11:13.69.
Cheyenne Central set the state record in the girls’ 4x800 relay at 9:42.14. That lowered the time by over four seconds.
Addison Alley of Riverton won the 55-meter hurdles (8.27). Lillian Hudson from Kelly Walsh was the high jump state champion (5-7). Her teammate, Allie Scribner, won the long jump (18-5.50). KW’s Jaidyn Jones won the pole vault (11-9).

Rhoades and Murphy led the Thunderbirds to the Title
East junior Dayton Rhoades was the star of the weekend. He was the only individual to win three events. Rhoades set a new state record in the boys’ 55-meter dash at 6.46 seconds. He also captured the 200 meters (22.02) and the long jump (23-4.50).
Teammate Derrick Murphy won two events. He took first in the high jump (6-6) and triple jump (46-7.50). The other East win was by Keagan Eicholtz in the pole vault (15-3).
The Thunderbirds edged out two-time defending champion Sheridan by 2.5 points in the team standings. East finished at 138.5 points to the Broncs’ 136. Thunder Basin finished third in the boys’ division at 68.5 points, and Natrona County was fourth at 61.5.
Laramie’s Flynn Arnold repeated as the 4A boys’ state champion in the 400 meters (48.72).
Sheridan’s Ryder Charest defended his crown in the 800 meters (1:56.88). The Broncs also swept all four relays, and Sheridan’s Eli Balkenbush took first in the 1600 meters (4:23.25).
The other event champions were Natrona County’s Champ Ransom in the 3200 meters (9:31.15), his teammate Coulter Patricelli in the 55-meter hurdles (7.93), and Laramie’s Daxton Misslin in the shot put (57-4.50).
