Nevada Stuns The Wyoming Cowgirls At Home
The Wyoming Cowgirls suffered their first home loss of the season in a five-set defeat to Nevada last Saturday at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
Wyoming (12-8, 5-2) dominated the first set. They dropped sets two and three, but bounced back and won the fourth. The fifth set got away from the Cowgirls in the loss.
UW went on an 11-2 scoring run in the first set and pulled away for a set win, 25-10.
The second set featured five lead changes and 16 ties, but the Wolfpack pulled out a 27-25 set win. After the break, Nevada dominated the third set. They jumped out 7-2 and took advantage of 11 attack errors by the Cowgirls and won 25-15.
Set four saw Wyoming roar back. They opened the set on a 7-1 scoring run and never trailed on the way to a 25-16 set victory.
In the fifth and deciding set, the Wolfpack scored 10 straight points and easily won 15-3 for a match win.
Cowgirls head coach Chad Callihan was disappointed with his squad’s inconsistent effort.
“Just not good execution, bad volleyball. I don’t know how you come out and play so solid to start a match and not find a way to sustain it. Then to turn around and basically do it again in the fourth set, and not be able to sustain it, just kind of shows a little bit of immaturity on our part. We’ll have to get better with that.”
Senior Laura Beach led UW with 17 kills, which tied her career-high. She also had nine total blocks. Senior Courtney Chacon had 38 assists and career-best six total blocks.
Wyoming goes on the road for matches Thursday at Fresno State and Saturday at San Jose State.
