After 19 seasons as the man in charge, Wyoming swimming and diving head coach Tom Johnson announced his resignation Tuesday.

Johnson has been head coach since the beginning of the 1998-99 season. He swam for the Pokes from 1982-85 and was an assistant coach for the 1985-86 season.

Johnson had guided the Cowboys and Cowgirls to their highest ever conference finishes and been named coach of the year four times. While at UW, 30 members of his squads have won a Mountain West Championship, four a Western Athletic Conference Championship and four in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation titles. Johnson has coached four First Team All-Americans, five Honorable Mention All-Americans and 11 Academic All-Americans.

One notable achievement came when he coached Scott Usher to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

In a release from the university, Johnson said his last day will be April 30, 2017.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 19 years of coaching at my alma mater and will cherish the amazing memories that I have shared over the years with all of the athletes, coaches and my university colleagues, past and present.”

Johnson is going to enter the private business sector after his time is done at UW.

Athletic Director Tom Burman said a national search for a new head coach will be conducted.

We’ll have more on Tom Johnson’s resignation in a live interview with the head coach during the ‘Laramie Live on KOWB’ morning show Thursday at 8:40 a.m.
