University of Wyoming junior Clara Tapia was selected to the Academic All-America Women’s Basketball Third Team Monday for her performance in the classroom.

The Barcelona, Spain native becomes the first Cowgirl to receive this honor since Chaundra Sewell was named Third Team in 2013.

Tapia carries a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) in molecular biology and chemistry. She earned All-Mountain West Academic and Scholar-Athlete accolades last year. On the court she is averaging 4.7 points and 4.4 assists per game this season.

There are certain criteria that a student-athlete must meet to be considered for this honor. To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key contributor, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Tapia received First Team All-District VII honors in February.
