The Cheyenne Police Department is gearing up for its 9th annual Neighborhood Night Out on July 10.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says the department will host a block captains planning meeting on Tuesday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m.

"It's a chance to get all the paperwork and forms, everything together for putting on their block party, to get ideas and support from those other folks who've done a block party and to kind of begin the planning process for their own neighborhood block party," said Malatesta.

Malatesta says there were roughly 25 block parties last year, and he anticipates about the same amount this year.

"The whole purpose of these Neighborhood Night Out block parties is really to engage neighborhoods with one another," said Malatesta. "It's really important to get to know your neighbors, and we see that that reduces crime and really it just strengthens the community as well."
