"You're looking at the future of country music right here," Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild said at the end of the performance, seeing as how the tune highlighted some of country's biggest upcoming female stars.
The CMA used the 2019 CMA Awards to spotlight some of the genre's women. The show opened with a medley that involved the ceremony's co-hosts, Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton, in an all-star singalong that featured Terri Clark, Sara Evans, Crystal Gayle, the Highwomen (Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, Maren Morris and Amanda Shires), Martina McBride, Jennifer Nettles, Tanya Tucker and Gretchen Wilson, among others.
Earlier in the evening, McBryde took home the award for New Artist of the Year. In her acceptance speech, she mentioned both McEntire and country elder statesman John Prine.
The women of the hour certainly weren't struggling for jokes during the ceremony. But on a more serious note, McEntire revealed the co-hosting trio were "doing it for all the little girls watching tonight."
